But the sea is not only thing that the visitors can enjoy, also the flora and fauna has much to offer. The nature parks and marshes in which many different species of animals take refuge give a home to a large variety of fauna. Moreover, the Ter, the river that flows right through the region, meets the sea very near to l'Estartit in a area of outstanding scenery.

The Medas Islands, situated a mile off the coast consist of one of the most important nature reserves of flora and fauna in the Western Mediterranean.

The Medas Islands attract numerous visitors, and for this reason, l'Estartit arranges various boat excursions to them.

They are a protected area with many kinds of fish. Some, such as the Grouper, which is found here in the largest numbers of the whole of the Mediterranean, has adopted this privileged zone to live in and reproduce. At the same time the Medas Islands contain an abundance of fauna; reptiles, mammals, insects and above all, birds. The seagulls occupy the whole of the islands. As for the flora, which is constantly under attack by the winds and the saltiness of the region, various species still manage to survive. Of course, some fauna and flora have been imported by the different inhabitants living there over the centuries
In fact, in the middle ages, the islands were colonized and used as a refuge or for defence, but they were abandoned in 1932. From then on nature took over, and now is in control.

Apart from the Medas Islands, l'Estartit suggests other excursions, but of different kinds
